Criteria for Academic Excellence Awards

Honors with Distinction and Honors awards will be given to students who meet the following requirements:

  1. Awards are based on marks attained during the current school year only. Marks attained at Harry Ainlay High School between September 1 and June 30 will be accepted. Summer School, Night School and Correspondence course marks will not be used.
  2. The student will have no final mark less than 50% during the year.
  3. Grade 10 and 11 awards will be based on a minimum of 30 credits and Grade 12 awards will be based on a minimum of 25 credits using marks for the third reporting period of the year.
  4. Honours with Distinction will be awarded to students with an averaged mark of 90.0% or higher. Honours will be awarded to students with an averaged mark of 80.0% to 89.9%.
  5. Honourable Mention will be awarded to students with an averaged mark of 75.0% to 79.9%.
  6. Recognition will be awarded to students with Honours with Distinction, Honours and Honourable Mention. First term awards are based on at least 20 credits for Grade 10 and at least 15 credits for Grade 11 and Grade 12.
  7. Students may not use marks obtained on appeal exams towards the attainment of curricular awards.

Note: No exceptions will be made to students whose mark is a fraction of a percentage short of any of the three levels.

University of Alberta Entrance Awards

You are eligible for the following U of A Entrance Awards if you are entering U of A for the first time directly out of high school; entering after taking time off from high school; or, entering with less than 24 postsecondary transfer credits:

  • Academic Excellence – based on Grade 11 and 12 marks with a minimum average of 80%.
  • Scholastic Distinction – based on Grade 10, 11 and 12 marks with a minimum average of 95%.
  • Entrance Leadership – based on outstanding leadership and Grade 11 and 12 marks with a minimum average of 80%.
  • Eldon Foote Track and Field – based on excellence in track and field, Alberta residency, minimum average of 80% in Grade 12.
  • Advanced Placement – based on Advanced Placement marks.
  • Universiade ’83 – based on excellence in athletics or fine arts, minimum average of 80% in Grade 12.
  • Faculty/Department Selected – variable
